FAQ: Capture v3, Slide, and Slide Lite Kickstarter

Add-Ons: I want to learn more about the add-on items.

Go to https://peakdesign.com and click on the Products tab. Our website has tons of information, including pictures, videos, and specs, about all of our products. It’s by far your best resource for deciding what gear is the right for you.

Add-Ons: I want to add a PD product but I don't see it in the Add-On Menu.

There are a handful of products that are not in the Add-On section that unfortunately cannot be added onto a Kickstarter shipment. These items are either discontinued, not in stock everywhere, or in low enough supply that including them in the Add-On menu could put backers at risk of shipping delays.

Last updated: November 15, 2017 13:41

Add-Ons: How do I add additional items to my reward?

It’s actually very straightforward. After you answer the questions at the beginning of your BackerKit survey, you’ll reach the Add-On section. There, you can add on whatever items you want to your reward. If the cost of those items exceeds what you pledged, you can pay the difference via credit card in your BackerKit survey.

If you pledged more money than the value of your award + shipping, you’ll see a credit when you get to the Add-On screen in the survey. As you add things to your reward, that credit will decrease. If your credit hits $0 and you keep adding things, then you will owe additional funds. Once you are finished adding stuff you can pay those additional funds via credit card in the next step.

Shipping: When will I receive my stuff?

We have every intention of shipping all rewards so that they leave our warehouses by early December. That means about 95% of backers (who fill out their fullfiment surveys correctly and on time) should get their new products before Christmas.

Please understand that this is our goal…we’ll do everything we can to make it happen…but it is by no means a guarantee. To be clear, we cannot guarantee that packages will be at your doorstep before Christmas. December is an exceptionally busy month for post services worldwide, and delays happen on a regular basis due to inclement weather, port congestion, or high volume. We can also not guarantee that our manufacturing schedule will hold. If a machine breaks or a shipment is lost, our schedule can be impacted in certain areas. We always build our schedules with ample wiggle room for these unforeseen circumstance, but in the words of our dads, sh*t happens.

We often get asked if we can expedite the shipping of rewards to individual backers in special circumstances. The short answer to that one is that we unfortunately can’t do that. If it helps, just know that after our funding period ends our team’s absolute #1 priority will be getting our backers’ rewards fulfilled as fast as possible.

For the duration of our funding period we will be putting final tweaks on our manufacturing, assembly and QA processes. Once those things are set, we’ll begin making production runs of our new products. When those new products are ready, they’ll be sent to our 5 fulfillment warehouses. And when all products are in the warehouse, we’ll begin fulfilling.

Shipping: What carrier will you use?

DOMESTIC: If you’re in the US, we’ll be shipping your package out of our Los Angeles fulfillment center using a ground service (USPS priority, FedEx or UPS depending on destination and shipment size). These packages will have tracking information that will work within the US.

INTERNATIONAL: Non-US orders will ship from one of our 4 international warehouses located in the UK, Hong Kong, Toronto, and Australia. In order to save our backers costly duties and taxes, Peak Design is going to be importing all of our products into these countries prior to shipping them to you. This means that your shipments:

  1. Won’t require taxes or duties in Canada, UK, EU, HK, and Australia (other countries may have applicable duties/taxes, please check with your customs office for specific details)
  2. Will arrive quickly and not get held up in customs.
  3. May have tracking, but may not guaranteed (depending on the particular post service, of which there are too many used to name). For EU and Asian backers, Royal Mail International or Hong Kong Post will be used most commonly.

Note that we cannot alter the value of your rewards on customs declarations - the value will be declared as the total value of the items contained in the shipment.

Shipping: Can I pick up my reward from the PD office or a local warehouse?

Sorry, we cannot do direct pickups of rewards. Our shipping system is highly automated and designed to get large quantities of stuff to people quickly and accurately, but it is unfortunately not designed to allow for manual pick-up.

Last updated: November 06, 2017 06:30

Shipping: What's the cost?

Our Kickstarter shipping rates differ based on where you are shipping your reward:

United States, Canada, Mexico: $6 United Kingdom: $8 Australia: $10 Everywhere Else: $12

If you choose no reward but still want to add stuff using the Add-On Menu, then you must also increase your pledge by the corresponding shipping amount above.

We broke our shipping rates out based on our average cost of shipping in each region. We have 5 global warehouses, so some regions are less expensive to ship to than others. The shipping rates are the same for every reward level, so no matter how much you order, you pay one low rate.

Will there be other colors?

Possibly, but not in the near future. Colors add a lot of stress to our supply chain and inventory management, hence we’re sticking to just 2 colors for our new products for now…in doing so we hope to satisfy a broad range of customer tastes, while keeping our overhead as low as possible.

Last updated: November 08, 2017 18:13

Capture: Why did you remove the twist/plate lock?

Because it was redundant, uncomfortable (it stuck into your gut when in belt mode), and (as we found out by surveying our backers) used by very, very few people. It was also confusing…many people who used the plate lock did so because they did not realize Capture v2 had a button safety lock. This was also something we observed repeatedly in the wild and at tradeshows, and then corroborated that with data from customer surveys.

Don’t be mistaken: Capture v3 has more secure locking mechanisms than ever before. The quick-release lock is made from all metal parts now. The redesigned button safety lock is smoother and more ergonomic.

Warranty. Got one?

Yes. All Peak Design products carry a lifetime guarantee. That means if any part becomes defective or dysfunctional over time we will repair or replace it free of charge.

Last updated: November 08, 2017 18:13

Refunds?

While all of our products are guaranteed for life, we do not offer refunds or returns on items received as Kickstarter rewards.

The support we get from our Kickstarter backers is what enables us to run and grow our business, gather customer feedback, design new products and improve existing ones. In the Kickstarter community, the items that you receive after making a pledge are referred to as “rewards” because they are not purchases in the traditional sense. They are gifts - in our case, camera products - that are sent to our supporters as a token of appreciation for their support of our business. In the same way that public television funds their service through the pledges of their supporters, who in turn receive gifts and continued programming, we have chosen to run and grow our business on a crowdfunded business model.

We appreciate your understanding of our policy and the support you have given us. If your reward truly offers no value to you, here are a few things that you could do in the spirit of crowdfunding…

  1. Give your reward to a friend. Our products might not work for you, but there are many folks out there who might find them very valuable. We’d love for you to share our gear with a friend of yours.
  2. Sell your reward to somebody. Many Kickstarter rewards were purchased below the retail value – if you want to recuperate that value and possibly even more, throw your reward up on eBay.
  3. Give your reward another chance. Some of our products can take some getting used to. All of our gear is designed for use in a variety of scenarios. Maybe it doesn’t work for you right now, but perhaps you’ll find the right time and place in the future.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Capture: What if I own a Manfrotto tripod?

If you own a Manfrotto® RC2 tripod and you want a new Capture clip, good news. Our new Dual Plate fits all RC2 tripod heads.

And even better news…you can buy Capture in clip-only form now. If you want Manfrotto RC2 compatibility, do one of these:

  1. In the Add-On menu, add Capture v3 (CLIP ONLY) to your cart, and then add Dual Plate to your cart.

OR

  1. Switch your reward to the $60 Capture v3 (for Manfrotto RC2) reward. You can then use the Add-On section to get whatever else you want. If you switch from another reward level and you want the other items in that level, you’ll just have to manually add them on in the Add-On section. The Kickstarter discount will be the same regardless of what you do.

Capture: Can I just add $5 to my reward to get Dual Plate instead of a Standard Plate?

No, but fret not…there’s an easy solution for you. See the FAQ titled “Capture: What if I own a Manfrotto tripod?”

Last updated: November 15, 2017 13:37

Rewards: Can I get multiple rewards?

Kickstarter has a limitation where every backer can choose 1 and only 1 reward per project. However, BackerKit gives us an easy workaround. Simply use the Add-On section to manually add whatever additional items you want to your reward. You’ll get the exact same Kickstarter discount pricing for manual add-ons.

Survey: Do I have to answer every question?

Yes, and no. You must provide a response to every single survey question, but for the marketing-type questions, you may choose the “Opt Out” option if you choose to not give a response. Unfortunately we do not have the technical capability to let you skip those questions.

Last updated: November 15, 2017 13:45

Survey: Why so many gosh darn questions?

We want to know what makes you tick, so we can continue to design great products that solve your needs. We also pour tons of effort into these Kickstarter campaigns…not just in the design and development of our new products, but also in reaching new people who we think would dig our gear. We want to get a sense for what efforts paid off and where we can improve moving forward.

We really, really appreciate your responses!

Payment: My Kickstarter payment failed! What do I do now?

If your payment failed via Kickstarter, there’s still a chance for you to get your same rewards for the same Kickstarter price. You will still have a survey emailed to you, but it will show that you pledged $0. You will be able to pick whichever reward and add-ons you want, and then pay with a credit card.

Some international payment methods (particularly international bank cards) might not work with BackerKit’s payment system. So, you may have to use a credit card for the payment to go through.

Last updated: November 15, 2017 13:46

Survey: I'm moving! What do I enter for my shipping address?

Give us your expected shipping address for the month of December. If you don’t know what your address will be during that time we recommend not filling out your address yet. We’ll let you know when we’re ready to start shipping bags, and at that time you can go in and enter your correct address.

Last updated: November 15, 2017 13:47

Survey: Will I be able to change my answers?

Yes, you’ll be able to change anything—your address, add-ons and even pledge level—up until we are ready to start shipping. When we’re ready we will “lock down” all completed surveys, load your info into our shipping software and begin shipping your stuff. We’ll tell you before we lock down surveys so you have time to make one last pass at them.

Note that we cannot lock down surveys that are incomplete. You must fill out your survey in full in order for us to ship you your rewards.

Survey: What is Backerkit?

BackerKit is a 3rd party service that helps project creators like Peak Design make our backers happy by sending out easy-to-use surveys and giving them another chance to take advantage of our Kickstarter discount. We’ve worked with BackerKit for our past 5 Kickstarter projects, and their services just keep getting better and better. So, please don’t be alarmed by the backerkit.com URL or the BackerKit logo at the top of the survey…you’re in very trusted hands.

Survey: Where is mine? I can't find it!

  1. Hold tight, surveys are sent in batches to prevent website-crushing click floods. Check your email periodically between November 15th and 17th.

  2. The fastest way to get to your survey is to go to the following site and enter your Kickstarter email address: https://capturev3.backerkit.com/

  3. Maybe you’re checking the wrong email account. Your survey was sent to the email address that is associated with your Kickstarter profile. Not sure what email that is? Login to Kickstarter, click on the icon in the upper right of the screen, and go to Settings > Account.

  4. Search your inbox and SPAM folder for “Capture” or “Response Needed.”

  5. If all else fails, go to https://capturev3.backerkit.com/, click the FAQ link, and then click the Contact tab. The kind folks at BackerKit are here to help!

Capture: What tripods does it work with?

The plate that comes with Capture (called Standard Plate) works with a vast majority of Arca-type tripod heads. Most quick-release style tripod heads have Arca-type plates…it’s the closest thing there is to an industry standard. If you don’t know if your tripod is Arca compatible, look up your tripod online.

We also make a plate for Capture (called Dual Plate) that works with Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads. For info on how to get Dual Plate, see the next FAQ.

ARCA TRIPOD LIST

Here’s a quick list (generated by our customers) of brands that make Arca-type tripods. It’s not exhaustive, but it’s pretty inclusive of the major brands out there.

3 Legged Thing – most models (www.3leggedthing.com)

Acratech – all knob-clamp models (acratech.net)

Benro – B-series ballheads (www.benrousa.com)

Desmond – DAC-1 tripod head (buy it on Amazon)

Fotopro – all screw-knob models (http://www.fotopro.com/en/) - Rollei (C5i)

Giotto’s - all screw-knob models including MH655, MH658 and MH1302 (www.giottos.com)

Horusbennu – most models (www.horusbennu.com – in Korean)

Jobu Design – most gimbals and quick release heads (www.jobu-design.com)

Joby – Gorillapod Ballhead X (www.joby.com)

Kirk – all tripod and monopod head models (www.kirkphoto.com)

MeFOTO – all screw-knob models, except DayTrip (www.mefoto.com)

Markins – Q-Ball knob release heads (www.markinsamerica.com or www.markins.com)

Oben - all screw-knob models (www.obensupports.com)

ProMaster – only tripods with screw-knob quick release heads, like the XC525 (promaster.com)

Really Right Stuff – all screw-knob and lever-release quick release clamps (reallyrightstuff.com)

Sirui – all ball head models (www.siruicanada.com)

Vanguard – BBH & TBH models (www.vanguardworld.com)

Wimberly – most heads and QR clamps (www.tripodhead.com)

Most screw-knob ARCA-type heads - a good rule of thumb is that if your tripod head is Arca-type and it has a screw-knob style quick-release, then it is compatible with Capture.

MANFROTTO RC2 TRIPOD LIST

Dual Plate works with Manfrotto® heads with model numbers containing “RC2.” If your Manfrotto® tripod head model number contains the characters “RC2” it means that your head is designed to work with Manfrotto® RC2 quick-release plates.

For those of you familiar with our older PROplate and DUALplate, you might recall that those plates didn’t fit all RC2 heads. Our new Dual Plate, according to the extensive testing we’ve done, fits all RC2 style tripod heads.

Can I add Flexfold Dividers to my order as an add-on?

Unfortunately, the Flexfold dividers will not be available as an add-on for this Kickstarter campaign. However, they’re currently available for purchase separately of this crowdfunding campaign on the Peak Design website directly

Last updated: November 17, 2017 15:32

Are the new products backwards compatible?

For a vast majority of use cases, yes! You can review a compatibility chart here

But please note that there are a few incompatibilities to be aware of:

  1. Our new tripod plates do not work with previous Capture models (but old tripod plates will work with Capture v3). Our new plates are lower profile than the old ones. Capture v3 accoomdates them because the clamping bolts are recessed into the chassis of the clip. If you take one of the new plates and stick it in an older Capture model it will fit and lock into place. But if that plate is attached to the bottom of a camera, the camera body will be obstructed by the clamping bolts and the plate will not fit. This goes for both the new Standard Plate (that comes with Capture) and the new Dual Plate (for Manfrotto RC2 tripod heads, sold separately in the Add-On menu).

  2. Our new Capture v3 will not work (very well) with P.O.V. Kit (peakdesign.com/pov-kit). This is because we removed the redundant twist/plate lock on Capture v3, which means you won’t be able to prevent P.O.V. Kit from jiggling when it’s locked into Capture v3. We are working on a new version of P.O.V. Kit that will have a stabilizing mechanism built into it. We plan to release it in the first half of next year.

  3. Our new Capture v3 will not work with the old Pro Pad. The new Pro Pad won’t work very well with older Capture models. This is because we reduced the size of Capture v3 and the new Pro Pad. Capture v2 and v1 were about 1 cm (.4”) wider than Capture v3. The old Pro Pad was also a bit larger. We reduced the size of Capture and Pro Pad to make them significantly more comfortable and less obtrusive.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
